A yoga therapy trainee’s perspective  – Reflections on the Yoga United Education’s Professional Yoga Therapy Training

“

As we come to the end of the our professional diploma training, 600hrs later, we ask our trainees to reflect on all they received from the training as they transform into professionally qualified yoga therapists.

When Ruth came onto the course, she was interested in learning more about yoga therapy but was not sure if she wanted to be a professional yoga therapist working 1-2-1 and running group programmes.

Here is what she wrote…

I signed up to the Yoga United Yoga Therapy training in the same way I took up the BWY Yoga Teacher training in 1999.  In both cases my curiosity met my desire to learn and develop as a person. I love learning and helping others and this soulful course immediately felt like a good fit.  I had been on pause when I had my son in 2009 – having done a bit of pregnancy yoga and some academic master’s courses which related to my work, I had essentially stopped learning more or being curious about Yoga due to a new little person in my life. I felt ready for my own adventure into discovery.

I have adored the diversity of teaching and teachers.  The course is a perfect framework to develop as an authentic yoga therapist – where you can find your own style and truth. This Yoga Therapy course has enabled me to dive back into philosophy, physiology and psychology – to go back to the yogic texts and re-explore my knowledge and understanding in a completely different way.

The course has reinforced that I am a deeply caring human being, wanting to help and support.  It is about making a difference to people’s lives through my work at a macro level and through yoga on a micro scale to individuals. Having to complete three case studies has given me an insight into the healing power that Yoga Therapy can deliver to people over a number of sessions.  From people saying they ‘have never felt this good before’, being able to feel a place that has been numb due to trauma, to sleeping well again…and other magical revelations.  There is a deep sense of gratitude to be able to help people find their way into their bodies and find their own answers to what they need.

Co-creating sessions with health seekers is a delicate dance of leading and following which, with lots of practice, using presence, deep listening and my intuition, creates trust in the process so the session can flow in natural and surprisingly insightful ways.

This course has helped me realise it is not me who has the answers and holds the authority in the therapeutic alliance, and has given me the skills to guide seekers to find their own answers. It’s empowering – the process is far more effective than teaching.

The knowledge and understanding that I have gained in the course integrates into my everyday life – interactions at work and mentoring sessions have been touched by the sensitive listening approach.

It is wonderful to think that the cohort of amazing women I have shared this journey with, will take this important work out into the world and ripple out in meaningful ways.  I am sure we will continue to be connected as the support and wealth of shared experience has been deep and life changing.

My yoga therapy practice is online and in person – If you are stuck or depleted, if you are looking to adventure inward to reconnect with yourself…here are my details
