Yoga United are delighted to welcome - James Boag to join Yoga United in India for his 'Ancient and Always New: Timeless Teachings from the Heart of the Yoga Tradition. This retreat is on a FULL BOARD basis.
James works with a range of mutually complementary lenses to explore yoga principles in practical application, including: principle-based asana, natural movement, meditation, kirtan singing and chanting, storytelling and interpretation, satsang talks, discussion and inquiry, nourishing high quality food and time outdoors.
As we will be in India, we will take the opportunity to drink deep from the source. Dive into the practical gifts of the Yoga tradition on the nourishing land of Mother India for rest and deep exploration, space for contemplation and time for celebration.
New Year’s Resolution and Celebration: Is it not a great and glorious gift to be alive?
On this retreat, we will deepen our experiential understanding of how to weave the practical support of yoga principles into the reality of our daily lives, making every day a yoga holi-day.
During the retreat we will work with:
- Daily āsana/movement practice/class, regular guided and silent meditation
- Āsana and natural movement work/playshops: how we can skilfully employ yogic principles to support steady ease throughout our day and through all the stages of our lives. Rehabilitating, reinforcing and refining healthy neuro-muscular patterns and efficient kinetic chains through the body for safe and effective movement in daily life and in movement activities. How to safely and nourishingly move the spine and move from the centre for sustainable and efficient lifelong movement. Play and exploration for whole system renewal, development and recreation.
- Meditative walking and time outdoors
- Yoga of sound and song, kirtan
- Quiet time and space for rest
- Daily satsang: working with the support of timeless teachings from the Yoga Tradition, how we can weave steady harmony into the reality of our dynamic human lives, with reference to story and symbol, and yoga texts including Yoga Sutra-s and Bhagavad Gita, with different emphases each week.
We will also have the opportunity to enjoy one full day excursion on the beautiful Keralan backwaters and other shorter excursions.
When we grant ourselves the space for retreat, we give ourselves the chance to check in with and recalibrate how we treat ourselves - how we can honour and fully embody the gifts of our birth. The way we practice on this program will equip participants with practical tools to support ongoing, personal, daily practice and inquiry supported by the time-tested, robust principles of the yoga tradition.
What is this retreat about?
This retreat is about what Patañjali describes in the Yoga Sūtra as the purpose of life, our: Education, Enjoyment, Emancipation
Education: Drawing forth our innate gifts and capacities by working with broad spectrum, mutually supportive lenses of yogic inquiry: movement and stillness, āsana and natural movement; sound, silence and song; story, symbol, archetype and inquiry, sense exploration; working with the elements; meditation.
Enjoyment: Deepening our understanding of the means to cultivate a joyful and sustainable practice that nourishes and reinforces whole-system wellbeing and integration through all the cycles and stages of real life.
Emancipation: ‘Emancipating ourselves from mental slavery’: Allowing time for spacious, honest inquiry and realistically preparing to transform patterns that no longer serve us and invite ways that foster deepening harmony.
In particular, we will explore the practical principles of whole-life yoga through the complimentary lenses of: Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra-s, the Bhagavad Gītā, the ‘Purāṇa’, the ‘ancient and always new’ realm of myth, story and symbol, including the great Indian epics Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa, with live storytelling and interpretation from James.
Sample daily schedule: *Subject to adjustment! This is just to give an indication of the flow of a typical day. Programs with James are always unique and develop according to the needs of the group and the special opportunities of being on retreat. We will work with our environment, bring clothes for yoga movement practices indoors and out.
